Some hints and tips for making lanterns.
Pumpkin Lantern
Choose a pumpkin with the greatest possible verticle height as this will give you more space for cutting out the facial features. You will need to hollow out some of the flesh as the cavity left by removing the seeds is usually not large enough. The scraped out flesh can still be used for pumpkin soup.
Cut a small round depression in the inside base of the pumpkin to hold the tea light candle. The candle can be fixed by dripping in some hot wax.
Milk carton lanterns
One litre milk or juice cartons can be made into lanterns. Simply cut out shapes in the sides of the carton, and glue a tealight candle or LED torch into the bottom. Make two holes in the top and secure a handle.
Cover some of the cut-outs with coloured tissue paper if you want something fancier, although this will increase the fire risk.
