Solstice Celebration 2009
Neighbourhood Garden Winter Solstice Celebration
Sunday 21st. June 2009
About 70-80 people turned up at the Neighbourhood Garden on Sunday evening to celebrate the Winter Solstice.
Possums Playcentre had made special lanterns in the previous week. Some of these were ranged along a path of light from Batchelor Way to the garden, and shortly after 5pm, as darkness fell, the little Possums made a delightful parade, holding their lanterns aloft and singing.
Everyone enjoyed a barbecue and lots of chatter and meeting their neighbours. There were more lanterns - a huge 'teepee' lantern and two pumpkin people, and sparklers for the children too.
The weather was mild and the stars shone in the sky. It was a great event, and the winter Solstice was well and truly celebrated. Now we are looking forward to the gradually increasing hours of daylight and approaching spring planting season!
Here are a few photographs from the celebration.
